Description: A series of interactive classes will be offered in Wetmore beginning Sept. 16 by the Small Business Development Center at Washburn University . Content is appropriate for persons interested in starting a business, strengthening the foundation of an entrepreneurial venture or looking to stimulate growth in an existing business.

All sessions will be 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays at the Glacial Hills Enterprise Center , 334 Second St. , Wetmore. The series features:

Researching Your Business Idea (Tuesday, Sept. 16): Learn how to research your industry, market and customers using the library and online resources. Topics will include determining necessary start-up expenses, discovering current trends in the industry and resources for determining demographics and target areas for marketing.

Writing the Business Plan (Tuesday, Sept. 23): A business plan is a useful and even necessary tool to obtain financing, as it helps to organize ideas, to target market and to identify potential problems. Participants will receive a financial model template for creating financial statements and projections such as start-up costs, cash flow and sales forecasts.

Legal and Registration Requirements (Tuesday, Sept. 30): Learn the basic legal steps of setting up a small business and common legal pitfalls to avoid. Taught by an attorney, topics will include structures of corporations and LLCs, licensing requirements, tax registration and structure and trademark policies.

Creating the Marketing Plan (Tuesday, Oct. 7): Marketing plays a vital role in the success of every small business. Discussions will include market research, evaluating competition and determining competitive edge, identifying target markets, promotion and advertising and pricing considerations.

Keeping the Books (Tuesday, Oct. 14): An effective accounting system is essential to success. In addition to setting up a record-keeping system, tips will be given on how to understand and use financial statements, profit and loss/income statements, balance sheets and determine tax requirements.
