Flu info 2008

The annual flu season begins in October and can continue until May.

Every year, between 5 percent and 20 percent of the U.S. population gets the flu. That means at least 15 million Americans (and as many as 60 million) get sick from the flu every year, with more than 200,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths annually, according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

State health officials say the best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu shot each year. Here are some options of where you can go to get your shot.

In addition to getting the flu vaccine, you should take these steps to avoid spreading germs:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • If you get the flu, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
