Mumps confirmed in Topeka
One Topeka kindergartner has a confirmed case of the mumps.
Thursday, letters were sent to parents at Avondale East Elementary School informing them a kindergartner was diagnosed with the mumps.
In 1992 a Kansas law required all public school students entering kindergarten to have the Measles Mumps Rubella vaccine before coming to school.
A spokesman for the Topeka Public Schools says it is up to parents to keep shot records up to date but now says it's the schools responsibility after the outbreak.
"The nurse here checked the records of all the students and the students whose MMR records were not up to date they were given a call cause we want make sure all the parents were aware what the situation was and for the students whose MMR's were not up to date, they need to stay away from school until its brought up to date," said Ron Harbaugh, Topeka Public Schools Communication Director.
Sharon Watson, Kansas Health Department Director of Communications says it's against state law to allow students to attend class without the MMR vaccine.
The only exemption to the law is for medical or religious reasons.
