Police department to purchase new helicopter

The Topeka Police Department's plans for a major equipment upgrade are "up in the air."

The department wants a new helicopter to bolster their flagging fleet.

Right now, they have two choppers but the department said one of them is on its last legs and will need major maintenance soon.

And they also want a replacement for a helicopter they lost in a training accident last September.

"Upgrading would be a little faster aircraft," said Mike Boucher, Topeka Police Department. "It'd give us more speed, more payload, it would carry the equipment that we have on the aircraft easier and with not much more as far as expense."

Wednesday, the department will give the media and the city council a sneak peak at the new chopper it wants to buy.
