It's chewy, minty and it helps prevent pregnancy. It's the first chewable birth control pill.
New Jersey-based drugmaker Warner Chilcott launched the pill today. Femcon Fe is a chewable version of the company's Ovcon 35 pill, which has been on the market for about 30 years.
It's said to have the same hormones as standard oral contraceptives, but provides an alternative for women who don't like swallowing pills. The tablet is also aimed at women on the go or who sometimes forget to take their pills.
One doctor says it isn't a "great leap forward," but it's a start. He thinks it's a better approach for young women, who have a high rate of unplanned pregnancies.
A month's supply of Femcon Fe will sell for $44 wholesale and slightly more at pharmacies.
