The history of the greeting card goes back to an Englishman named Sir Henry Cole. In 1843, Cole sent the first holiday greeting card. He was a wealthy philanthropist, whose list became overwhelming. So, he hired an established artist to do a lithograph on good paper stock to mail out during the holidays. Soon demand rose, and these cards became mass produced.

At first, cards were most popular in the upper classes, but today people of all socio-economic class send holiday wishes to their friends and loved ones.

Seth Toebben and James Schaefer from Signs of Life in Lawrence will further your knowledge about Christmas card history and help you decorate your own cards Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Signs of Life, 722 Massachusetts St. The workshop is for adults and children.
