Wamego animal shelter working with city to correct problems

State Statute says all animal shelters and pounds must have indoor kennels, electricity and hot water to disinfect the cages.

The Wamego City Pound has none of these things, but the group who runs the pound hopes by working with the city they will soon be able to change that.

“We're just a small society trying to do the best for the animals and trying to work with the city of Wamego,” said Susan Clasen, Humane Society.

Clasen runs the Pottawatomie County Humane Society.

When the society agreed several months ago to run the pound for the city, she said the city made a few promises.

“There are things in the contract the city has not been able to fulfill yet,” she said.

According to a contract signed by the city of Wamego and the Pottawatomie County Humane Society, the city promised to put indoor kennels in to keep the dogs protected from the elements.

At this point, the dogs are still all outside but that's something the city manager said is in the works. He said a new kennel will be ready in the near future.

“Unfortunately, we get interrupted since we are a growing city and our crews are spread from different jobs, so that's delayed it somewhat but we are in the process of getting that done,” said Merl Page, City Manager.

Another agreement in the contract is that the pound would get a fenced in area for the dogs to exercise.

That project is underway and crews have been at the site setting poles for the fence for the past couple of days.

“That will help immensely when we've got a wide open area where you can let the dogs actually run instead of being in dog jail,” Clasen said.

Clasen said she doesn't blame the city for the situation the dogs at the pound are in. She just hopes the problems get solved.

“I think they have the intent to do those things. It just does happen very slowly,” she said.

The contract between the City of Wamego and the Pottawatomie County Humane Society expires in September and both parties have said they would like to re-sign and try to work together to do whatever's best for the animals.

Gee Whiz! This pound looks like a palace compared to the one in Burlingame, Ks. Go visit THAT one. It's out by the dump. Take water with you because they never have any.
