For several players, the MINK Wood Bat League marks the first time the athletes are using lumber as opposed to the ping of aluminum.
With less pop, decreased bat-speed and a smaller sweet spot, the team is quick to point out the obvious - they need as much practice as possible to adjust to the wood.
Golden Giants vs. Junior Giants
The Topeka Golden Giants got their season started off with a win Wednesday night over Salina. Thursday night they made it two in a row with a 7-5 victory over the Topeka Junior Giants. The Golden Giants are back in action Saturday against the Clarinda A's at 7:05 at Hummer Sports Park.
"I should have taken a little more time in the cage. You know I didn't get around to it and then, coming out here it's tough. I mean there's not much you can say about it, except that it's tough,” said Chris Dobler, Topeka Giants. “I mean it's a lot different, not a lot of pop in them but mostly a pitchers game when you work with the wood bat but you know. You got to get used to them. It's tough but we'll get around to it.”
