Parkville, Mo. Two people died after a small plane crash near the Kansas City International Airport Monday night.
A spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration said the Piper 32 plane was flying from Osage Beach and had been cleared to land at KCI about 7 p.m.
The plane was beginning to approach the airport when it began losing pieces in the air.
The FAA said the plane crashed in a soybean field about three miles west of Parkville, Mo. Parkville is about ten miles from downtown Kansas City.
There were apparently only two people on board. Authorities did not release their names.
A witness who lives about a mile from the crash site said he heard a "loud boom, like a stick of dynamite."
He said he then saw the plane spiral down.
The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation into the crash.
