'Superman Returns,' 'The Devil Wears Prada'

It's a bird. It's a plane. It's a downer.
"Superman Returns" is the latest comic book hero revisited by a former art-house director and given a brooding makeover. Trouble is, unlike say Batman, Spider-Man or the X-Men -- which the talented Bryan Singer previously adapted to the big screen -- Superman is too much of a goody two-shoes with no possibility of turning to "the dark side."
The story picks up five years after Superman (newcomer Brandon Routh) left earth to explore the remains of his home world.
When he arrives back in Metropolis, he is stunned to find out Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) is out of prison and reporter Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) has given birth to a son.
She's also nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for her essay "Why the World Doesn't Need Superman."
Will Superman's X-ray vision be able to cut through all that tension?
There are plenty of surprises en route to the answer. But it's all wrapped in a rather gloomy package.
Also opening this week is "The Devil Wears Prada." Anne Hathaway stars as an aspiring journalism grad who takes a job as the assistant to a sadistic, demanding fashion magazine editor, played by Meryl Streep. The film gives an insider look into to glamorous, cutthroat world of high fashion, but it will be best remembered for Streep's hilarious portrayal of the world's most passive-aggressive boss. Actually, Streep's character would have been a far better villain for Superman to take on.
