Convicted killer John Manard escaped last month in a dog crate that was carried inside a van driven by Toby Young.
In a letter to a Kansas City TV station, Manard called his escape an act of love.
He claimed Young didn't know he was hiding in the crate.
But prison officials said Young was deeply involved in the escape and bought a new car and amassed cash for the getaway.
Police captured the couple after a high speed chase in Tennessee.
