Huge swarm of bees postpone Overland Park activity

About 40,000 unwelcome guests forced the postponement of an elementary school event in Overland Park.
A swarm of honey bees frightened a group of sixth graders holding an Olympic Festival at Shawnee Mission South High School on Monday.
No one was stung and a beekeeper was called in to remove the bees.
The beekeeper said swarm calls have been up.
She received 20 in the last month, the amount she usually gets in a year.
"We get about 10, 20 swarm calls per year, but this year has been unusually bad because the mild winter didn't kill off most of the bees so we've been getting a lot of swarm calls," said Beekeeper Annie Johnson.
Johnson also said it was unusual for a swarm that large to be close to people without anyone getting stung.
