9:38 a.m. Wednesday, May 17, 2006
June 8 is the 40th anniversary of the 1966 tornado, which was an F5 category storm that swept through Topeka causing a lot of destruction. To commemorate the anniversary of the storm, the Ghost Tour Topeka will conduct Topeka Tornado Tours throughout the month of June in which you can learn more about the destructive storm.
Beth Cooper of Ghost Tour Topeka says tour goers can expect to hear stories and re-live the experience in a way, imagine the destruction path and hear various stories about damage, looting, and the affect the tornado had on the community.
The tours will depart from Celtic Fox at the corner of Eighth and Jackson. The tour will also go to the Capitol because the Capitol dome was damaged during the tornado. Cooper said that according to an eye witness, a house crashed into dome of Capitol. It will also go down Kansas Ave. and discuss the different things that happened along the street.
On June 8, 49 News will air a special of the Topeka tornado.
