More than 600 workers needed to make Election Day happen

Polls open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday

VIDEO: The polls open at 7:00 a.m. Tuesday and 55,000 voters in Shawnee County are expected to cast ballots

Election workers were in and out of the Shawnee County Election Office all day Monday. And though it takes a year to prepare, on the eve of Election Day, they seem to be ready as workers picked up supplies, including electronic voting machines.

But Election Commissioner Elizabeth Ensley said there's more to the set up than equipment and ballots.

"They have forms they're required to fill out, and an American flag is required," she said. "There are board worker manuals and signs they have to post."

More than 600 people will be on hand to help voters cast their ballots.

"It ends up being very smoothly," she said. "There will be things such as misunderstandings and problems but we try to take care of them as quickly and efficiently as possible."

Additional information

Voter turnout in Shawnee County is expected to be about 64 percent, which is higher than the State average. In fact, Ensley says about 25 to 30 percent of people only vote in the November general election. This is one reason why she said it's important for poll workers to pay close attention.

"We need to make sure we're clear on the instructions and we're able to help people, like don't use Xs or check marks," she said.

But in the end, Ensley said there's one piece of information she'd like to get across.

"To tell people to get out there and vote," she said.

And just a reminder, the polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday.
