Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to resign

Donald Rumsfeld plans to resign after six years as Secretary of Defense.

Bush says he had what he calls a series of "thoughtful conversations" with Rumsfeld and that both agree the "timing is right" for a change at the Pentagon.

Rumsfeld has had a tumultuous career as Defense Secretary, mostly due to the war on terror and situation in Iraq.

With polls showing Americans upset about the way the Iraq war is going, GOP officials say Rumsfeld will leave.

President Bush has repeatedly backed Rumsfeld. Just days ago, Bush gave Rumsfeld a thumbs-up, saying he wanted him at the Pentagon for the remainder of his term.

But an election that swung the House - and possibly the Senate - in the Democrats' favor may have contributed to today's decision.

Bush said he valued a "fresh perspective" and the effort of Rumsfeld, who he called a "superb leader."

He says Rumsfeld is a "trusted adviser and friend," and that he's "deeply grateful" for his service to the country.

Robert Gates, former head of the CIA, would replace Rumsfeld. Gates is currently the president of Texas A&M University.
