Gardening tip 7: Put down lawn seed by second week in October

When looking for good lawn seed, look for a brand that doesn't have any weed seed in it so you are not germinating grass weed also, said Annette Jackson, co-owner of Jackson's Greenhouse, 1933 NW Lower Silver Lake Road.
Lawn seed should be down by the second week in October.

"You want the lawn seed to have time to germinate and get it mowed before we start getting into freezes," Annette said.
Fall provides plenty of opportunities to put out nursery stock, like trees and stock.
Chrysanthemums are just starting to bloom now and can still be planted. Annette encourages growers to pinch back buds in the spring, so the blooms will be more beautiful in the fall.
All prennials should be mulched well for winter protection. The mulch provides a blanket-type protection to help keep the plants at a constant temperature.
However, it's too early in the season to plant tulips and daffodils. Annette says to wait until October when the ground starts cooling off.
