Martin earns bid to prestigious Portsmouth Invitational

— Kansas State senior Cartier Martin recently received one of 64 invitations to the prestigious Portsmouth Invitational, which is set for April 4-7 at Churchland High School.

Operating since 1953, the Portsmouth Invitational is one of the preeminent NBA pre-draft camps with approximately 200 NBA representatives in attendance. It is the only postseason event prior to the NBA’s pre-draft camp in Orlando, Fla. The four-day tournament consists of 11 games with the 64 invited college seniors playing on eight teams of eight players.

Martin will be playing for the Portsmouth Sports Club in the tournament and will team with Michigan’s Courtney Sims, Oral Roberts’ Caleb Green, Philadelphia’s Christian Burns, West Virginia’s Frank Young, Delaware State’s Jahsha Bluntt, Virginia Tech’s Jamon Gordon and Missouri State’s Blake Ahearn. The squad will begin play on Wednesday at 8 p.m. CDT against Beach Barton Ford, which includes Maryland’s Ekene Ibekwe and Boston College’s Sean Marshall.

A native of Houston, Texas, Martin left Kansas State as one of the top players in school history. He is one of just six players in school history to record 1,500 points and one of just three to top 1,500 points and 500 rebounds in a career. Martin ranks among the top-10 in 11 career statistics, including sixth in scoring with 1,546 points. He also ranks in third in minutes played (3,090), 3-point field goals made (178) and attempted (446), fifth in double-digit scoring (76) and 3-point field goal percentage (39.9), sixth in 20-point games (28) and field goals made (519), seventh in field goals attempted (1132) and games started (77), eighth in free throws made (330) and attempted (423).

This past season, Martin captured the Big 12’s inaugural Sixth Man Award and was selected to the coaches’ all-conference second team for the second consecutive season. He is the first player in the Big 12 era to earn second team honors in back-to-back seasons. Martin was also named to first team All-Big 12 team by the Kansas City Star and to the second team by The Associated Press, while he was selected to the USBWA All-District VI and NABC All-District squads. He paced the Wildcats in nine categories, including scoring (17.1 ppg.), 20-point games (13), double-figure scoring (29), field goals (197), 3-point field goals (78) and free throw percentage (79.9).
