Black beats Gold in ESU Spring Game

— Justin Wieser ran for 111 yards on just seven carries and Sean Partridge caught two touchdowns as the Black Team came from behind for a 21-17 win over the Gold Team at the Emporia State Spring Football Game. Over 750 fans turned out at Welch Stadium on Saturday morning to get the first official look at the Hornets under first year coach Garin Higgins.

The Gold Team was spotted a 17-0 lead to start the contest. Partridge put the first points on the board for the Black Team on a 19-yard reception from Ben Purkeypile. After holding the Gold Team on their next offensive series, Wieser broke loose on a 65 yard touchdown run to pull his team within 21-14. Andre Sloan El led the Black Team on the game winning drive and ended it with a 13-yard completion to Partridge for a 21-17 Black Team lead.

The Black Team quarterbacks of Sloan El and Purkeypile were a combined 12 of 22 for 127 yards and two touchdowns. Sloan El also gained 21 yards on six rushes.

The Hornets open the season for real on September 1, 2007 at Western State College in Gunnison, Colo.
