Sudan divestment bill still alive in Legislature
10:03 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2007
Legislative leaders say they still plan to address a proposal to have the state's largest pension fund divest from companies doing business with Sudan.
The issue was on hold while the Legislature took a three-week break. The proposal would force the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System to drop investments in companies doing business with the Sudanese government.
The measure is designed to pressure Sudan into ending violence in its Darfur region.
Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt and House Speaker Melvin Neufeld say legislators will consider the bill when they resume the session Wednesday.
The Senate passed the bill 40-to-0 last month, but the House hasn't debated the issue. The measure is now before a conference committee of House and Senate negotiators.
