False Alarm: Kidnapping did not happen

VIDEO: Police question and release two men after a six-year-old boy said they tried to kidnap him.

After investigating a reported kidnapping in Ogden Thursday morning, Riley County Police say it never happened.

Police released a statement shortly after seven Thursday evening, saying the boy who reported the kidnapping took back his story, and the two men police were questioning in connection with the report were released without charges.

But even though the kidnapping never happened, the possibility still left some parents in the Ogden community uneasy.

"My daughter is always told 'don't talk to strangers, don't get into a vehicle'," said Ogden parent Rebecca Sundgren.

The quiet community of Ogden got a bit of a scare, after a six-year-old boy told his teachers that two men in a white van had tried to kidnap him during his walk to school.

"The child came straight to us and told us something was wrong," said Ogden Elementary Principal Jim Armendariz.

The school immediately called the Riley County Police Department. Officers spoke to a witness...

"The witness saw some of what the child alleges, but not all of it," said Riley County Police Lieutenant Tim Hegarty.

...tracked the van down, and spent the day questioning the boy and the occupants of the van. In the end, the boy said the kidnapping never happened.

"We had a couple last year in Ogden that turned out to be not accurate and that's why we look at any call with skepticism. We don't necessarily believe the initial story of anybody," said Hegarty.

But while the news of a possible kidnapping spooked some parents...

"Yes it does, for this being a little town, it does surprise me," said Ogden parent Ann McElroy.

...they say they still feel like the town, and the school, are safe.

"I have no problems. I think we have a good school," said Ogden grandparent Carole Troy.

While the kidnapping did not happen, one of the main things parents told us was how impressed they were with the school's response. A letter was sent out to parents, and surrounding schools, just to keep everyone up to speed. We also talked to police and they say the boy's report could fall under filing a false report. No word on whether or not the child will be charged.
