VIDEO INTERVIEW: Creating frosting flowers with Sugar Creations Owner Rebecca Sutterby
Rebecca Sutterby, owner of Sugar Creations, creates floral designs on cakes using gum paste, sometimes called sugar paste.
Sutterby is an award-winning cake artist and shares with you how to create beautiful flowers to top off your beautiful or basic cakes.
She says the secret to creating frosting flowers is to roll the gum paste out thin. She then uses a pizza cutter to cut a petal shape. And pinch the end together to create the base of the petal.

Rebecca Sutterby's work can be viewed at www.sugarcreations.com. That Web site also has information on how to order her cakes.
If it's your first time, you may want to invest in some extra gum paste in case your petals crack or break. Keep some water handy to moisten the petals to make them more pliable and prevent breakage.
The water is also for molding together all the petals to create a flower. Cut out a little circle of a different color and stick it in the middle of the petals to create a center.
Sutterby says when competing in cake competitions she tries to make her flowers as botanically correct as possible. She's won the Food Network Challenge, where 10 chefs teamed up to earn $10,000. She participated in a cake-themed show.
Watch the video to see Sutterby demonstrate how to make frosting flowers, and you can see her easy-tip for making rose-shaped flowers.
