Woman gets 27-month sentence for helping escapee

The woman who helped a murderer escape from prison in a dog crate was sentenced today to 27 months in federal prison.
A judge ruled that Toby Young's federal sentence should run concurrently with a 21-month sentence she is already serving in state court. That adds six months to her sentence and means she will be released sometime next spring.
Young, who was the president of Safe Harbor Prison Dogs program, helped John Manard escape from Lansing Correctional Facility in February 2006 by hiding him inside a dog crate in a van. The two were captured nearly two weeks later in Tennessee.
Her involvement with Safe Harbor Prison Dogs program allowed her to become a regular visitor to inmates and a familiar sight among guards at the Lansing Correctional Facility.
Young pleaded guilty in March to a federal charge of knowingly providing a firearm to a felon.
She was sentenced to state prison after pleading guilty to aiding and abetting Manard's escape.
Manard was serving a life sentence at the facility for the first-degree murder of a man in Overland Park in 1996.
