Charter school proponents meet to rally support

A group of USD 501 patrons gathered Thursday to rally support for a charter school proposal for the historic Sumner School building.
"I think they've really lost sight of what should be the focus here, which should be the kids," concerned parent Micah Barron-Tinajero said.
The school board rejected that proposal earlier this month, but charter school supporters are urging the board to work with them, to find a way to make the proposal acceptable.
"Why is the district saying 'no, no, no'? Three times they have had the chance to say 'yes'," said Dr. Betty Horton, 501 board member and charter school supporter.
"The question I have for you is to ask the board, what day to they want to have the meeting? So that we put together a proposal that will meet the needs of the children," parent and charter school supporter Ruben West said.
Charter schools are designed to be places for innovative techniques. They are still district schools and must win approval of local districts to start. We called today, but did not hear back from board members who voted against the charter plan.
