Mother of 4-year-old shooting victim speaks out

The mother of a 4-year-old Topeka boy shot in a drive-by said she’s thankful the bullet hit where it did.

Marcus Rodriguez was hit in the arm Wednesday night when someone fired several shots into a home near 27th and Kentucky, which was full of small children.

He was released from the hospital Friday morning.

“I’m very angry that just because of some ignorant people, my son got shot and could’ve died,” said Jessica Rodriguez, his mother. “I told him they’re bad people, ignorant people who don’t think before they react.”

Marcus was at his babysitter’s house when he was shot.

“It doesn’t make sense to me, how in Topeka there’s so many shootings and innocent people are getting hurt,” said Rodriguez. “It amazes me. It amazes me how somebody could not care about innocent little kids.”

She said Marcus is scared and will hardly leave her side. She plans to enroll him in counseling.

“People who did this, they’re going to pay for what they did, but he’s still going to remember it. You know, he never had to think about this before,” said Rodriguez. “It was close; I mean he could be dead right now, over something real stupid I'm sure.”

Rodriguez said she has a good idea why the shooting happened, but wouldn’t discuss it. She said she won’t be taking her kids back to the house again.

Police said they have no suspects in the case, but are looking for a dark-colored sport utility vehicle in connection with the crime.
