VIDEO: Soldiers, commanders and friends gathered today at Morris Hill Chapel to remember the first fallen soldier from Fort Riley of 2007.
"Last time I saw Wright he was very happy, he was doing his job as a soldier and a leader and most of all a friend," Spc. Baron Von Nankivel, 1st Engineer Battalion, 1st ID said.
Spc. Nankivel is just got sent home for a short leave, he was in Iraq with Sgt. Wright for about a year.
"He was a great guy that never let anyone be alone. He always worked hard," Nankivel said. "A guy who was very strong and believed in, pushed soldiers to do their best and he always wanted to do what's best for his soldiers."
Staff Sgt. David Jorgensen gave a soldier's tribute at the memorial for Sgt. Wright Thursday.
"His last words were, Leonard get us out of here, get us out of here," SSG Jorgensen said in the chapel.
Every other soldier in the vehicle besides Wright lived.
"He was very outgoing, outspoken, he'd always bring a crowd," Jorgensen said. "He was very competitive and I think it was that competitive spirit that he held inside him that he passed on to his soldiers."
Sgt. Wright was born in Jamaica and enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1999. In the fall of 2006, he deployed with the 1st Engineer Battalion.
He is survived by his father Conroy, his mother Ruby Watson, and daughter Tiaja.
Wright's funeral will be held in Boston, Massachusetts. He will be laid to rest in Arlington, Virginia.
Sixty-eight active duty soldiers assigned to Fort Riley have died since the war began; twenty soldiers who trained at the post have died.
