Russian President Vladimir Putin is in Maine today for what some are calling "The Lobster Summit". Putin who is staying at the Bush family summer home arrived with former President Bush via helicopter. He then met up with the current President Bush and the First Lady. A short time later the Presidents went for a ride on the elder Bush's speedboat. Spokesman for both parties say that there is no agenda, but there is no doubt that Bush will be trying to ease Putin's worries over a U.S. missile defense system.
It's been ten years since the death of Princess Diana.On Sunday, she would have turned 46, and her sons put together a concert at Wembley stadium to commemorate the event. Sir Elton John, Duran Duran, Fergie, Joss Stone, Nellie Furtado, and others were among the 24 performers who played to a crowd of 70,000, as well as viewers around the world who watched the event on television.
A Kansas soldier has been killed in Iraq.28-year-old Sgt. William Crow Jr. died June 28 when an IED struck his vehicle. Crow was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 4th IBCT, with the 1st Infantry Division. Crow was from Grandview Plaza, Kansas.
After nine years of partnership with Harrah's Casino, Prairie Band Potowatomi Nation has stepped out on its own.Sunday marked the official passing of the baton of management from the Kansas Casino Corporation over to the tribe. Tribe chair Tracy Stanhoff says it's a dream come true. "With the gaming operation and the revenues that have come with it we're able to serve our people in a way never before been able to do. We've been able to build a renaissance on our reservation . We've put on infrastructure and fiberoptics, buildings for our elders, buildings for our children," Stanhoff said.
Flood victims in Osage County are cleaning up after raging waters took over their homes this weekend.The front yard of Quenemo resident Raymond Spillman looks like his family is having a sale. But his couch, typewriter, and washing equipment are just a few of things moved out of his home after a foot of water filled the inside. And, though he's upset Mother Nature ruined $5,000 worth of new carpet Spillman says it was bound to happen. He lives just blocks from the Maris de Cygne River. "My house could be floating down the river down here. It could've been a lot worse," Spillman said. Red Cross volunteers unloaded boxes of food and disaster kits that include soap, a toothbrush and toothpaste to help the 80 to 100 victims recover from the flood.
Residents of Coffeyville were given mandatory evacuation notices yesterday.You can see the water really isn't going anywhere, but the people have to. Five shelters are open in Coffeyville. The Red Cross and Salvation Army are helping out. If you'd like to make a donation you can do that at redcross.org or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS.
The rain has quit but the clouds and fog still remain. Still, quite muggy for today but the temperatures are going to stay in the mid-80s.
