Shred-a-thon helps Topekans protect identities and bank accounts

Topeka — Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the country. It happened to nearly 250 million Americans and 170 people in Topeka last year alone.

To help keep Topekans' important information from falling into the wrong hands, 49 News held a Shred-a-thon Saturday. Two truckfuls, nearly 10,000 pounds, of paper documents were shredded in an effort to prevent criminals from racking up fraudulent charges.

"It's made us aware. We try and be real careful about what we put in the trash," said Topeka resident Glenda Nelson.

"Can you ever be too careful? No, you can never be too careful - absolutely not," said identity theft victim Dick Corwin.
