Film students at the University of Kansas will have a chance to take classes inside a digital universe.
It's a 3-D virtual world that lets online residents carve out their own realities, from building classrooms to exchanging virtual currency that can be traded for real-life money.
The idea is to help KU students get up to speed on the latest technology used to make movies and animation in virtual reality.
The department plans to use a Web cam to document the Second Life experience.
KU's Art Department also is considering buying land in Second Life.
The island for KU's film studies will cost about $900 up front, plus $1,800 in annual upkeep fees.
Other schools with a presence in Second Life include Ohio University and Texas State University.
