Kansas man killed in construction accident at K-State
11:15 a.m. Thursday, March 8, 2007
A construction worker died Wednesday after falling from a forklift box at the Jardine Apartment Complex construction site at Kansas State University.
A second worker also fell, according to Troy Lane, assistant director of K-State police.
Steven E. Darveaux, Winchester, and Timothy W. Hanes, Meriden, got into a forklift box to be lowered with tools to ground level. The side of the box began to tip and both men fell from the box. The forklift box fell on Darveaux when he was on the ground.
The accident occurred between 5 and 5:15 p.m. Wednesday. When police arrived at 5:20 p.m. both EMS and the Riley County Fire Department already were on the scene.
Police said EMS workers were unable to revive Darveaux. The Riley County coroner was present at the scene. Darveaux was taken to Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home.
Both men were employed by a subcontractor of McPherson Construction Company.
Work on the 10-year $104 million apartment complex redevelopment project began in summer 2005.
