Gardening Tip 11: Don't get too anxious to start gardening
10:28 a.m. Friday, March 9, 2007
The warmer temperatures of late have raised ground temperatures a little, but Annette Jackson, co-owner of Jackson's Greenhouse, said some people might be planting too soon.
"It's getting close to the time when it's time to put out potatoes, peas," she said.
She added that cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and brussel sprouts can be planted in the next couple of weeks. However, "be prepared to cover it with milk jugs or hot caps or something to help protect it," she said.
Freezing low temperatures are not out of the question for March and April, said 49's Meteorologist Blake Smith.
Still, onions sets and plants are okay to be put in the ground now.
If you have fruit trees, make sure to apply dormant oil spray or lime-sulfur done for peach trees, which will help those trees grow and have a higher yield. Those sprays must be applied at least 24 hours before rainfall, Jackson said.
