With Spring Break just a week away - Washburn University is teaming up with Topeka police to help students stay safe. On Monday, some students got a little physical - while learning how to fend off attackers. The demonstration was geared towards keeping them safe during Spring Break - but they are techniques the students can use anytime. Police also reminded students to stick with people they know and trust while on spring break...not to give out personal information...and not to leave drinks unattended - where someone can slip dangerous drugs into them.

Firefighters have contained 80% of wildfire burning in Southern California. 1,200 residents who were forced to evacuate have been allowed to return home. You don't usually see these blazes until June. It's only March, and firefighters are out in force-- dropping water on hotspots. The scorched earth shows just how close the blaze came to multi-million dollar mansions in Anaheim hills. Fire officials say a car fire early Sunday started the inferno-- and it wasn't an accident. Ferocious winds drove the blaze up dry hillsides. It's Southern California's driest year on record.

The scandal at Walter Reed Army Hospital has forced another high-ranking official to step down. Under pressure from military superiors, Lieutenant General Kevin Kiley submitted his request for retirement. He's the third top Army official forced out in the fallout over shabby treatment of wounded soldiers at the D-C hospital. Last week, he apologized for the poor conditions before a Congressional panel.

A Kansas City family of *twelve is off on a Florida vacation-- while Extreme Makeover: Home Edition builds them a new home. Right now Jesus and Michelle Jacobo-- their four children, five nieces and nephews-- and Michelle's father live in a run-down home. The couple has been sleeping in the unheated garage -- while three of the boys lived in a basement hallway that often floods. One bedroom has no heat -- and ice forms on the walls in the winter. The "extreme Makeover" crew arrived Sunday -- and will soon demolish the house and begin building the new one.

A special visitor with an important message stopped by Quinton Heights Elementary on Monday. U.S. Senator Pat Roberts read to Miss Hamlin's Second Grade Class. It's part of his year long effort to promote reading in the state. On Monday, Roberts read a book called "House Mouse, Senate Mouse."
