Colossal funnel cloud that struck Greensburg caught on tape
12:57 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, 2007
The scene southwest of Greensburg on Friday evening at dusk showed a huge tornado that would eventually take 10 lives.
An EF-5 was so massive that the funnel covered an area nearly 1 3/4 miles wide. Illuminated by lightning, its deadly tip churned across the land.
Even seasoned storm chasers were in awe. Hail the size of baseballs pummelled the ground and property. Winds, reaching 205 mph at times, pushed cars off the road.
Witnesses said the funnel passed in two minutes. Nothing, but rubble was left in the town of Greensburg.
Monday residents who survived were at least let back to gather belongings. But recovery is handicapped because much of the Kansas National Guard and its equipment are in Iraq.
Governor Kathleen Sebelius is so troubled by what she feels is a slow federal response, she intends to personally raise the issue with President Bush when he comes to visit this hard-hit area Wednesday.
