Parking lot plan sparks controversy in historic Topeka

A strip of green space on a historical landmark could be a point of contention for one local Diocese.

The Episcopalian Diocese plans to turn a strip of grass connecting to Bethany Place, 701 SW 8th, into a parking lot.

The area would hold more than 40 cars for Grace Cathedral next door.

The City's landmark commission and the State Historical Preservation Office both voted against the project, saying it could compromise the historical integrity of the area.

But a spokesperson for the Diocese says that's not the case.

"The historic structures will not be harmed, not be touched, will not be moved, will not be impacted," said Melodie Woerman of the Episcopal Dioceses of Kansas.

Woerman says the trees in the area are not old enough to be considered historically significant.

The Diocese must have the approval from the City Council before it can move forward with the project.
