Learning to skate backwards. That's the hardest part about ice skating, said Colin Bennett, a member of the Capital City Figure Skating Club.

Bennett helped launch the skating club this year with his wife, Ginger.

And skating backwards is one of many techniques they are teaching the members.

"We were approached by the Kansas Expocentre and also Shawnee County, and they've known that I've skated before and they asked me 'Colin, would you start a skate program," he said.

He jumped on the idea to raise the community's interest in ice skating.

The Bennetts offer lessons. The club is open to all skill levels and individuals age 3 and up.

"This is is for anybody. We have all types of lesson packages and practice ice time," he said.

The Capital City Figure Skating Club is the only such club in Topeka and the third one in Kansas. The other two are in Kansas City and Wichita.

The club is affiliated with the U.S. Figure Skating Association, which holds several figures skating events throughout the year and sponsors the Olympic team.
