Caregivers give a lot of themselves, do they forget to take care of themselves?
Yes, said Marilyn Thomas, caregiver program specialist at the Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging, but now they have an opportunity to move in the right direction to correct it.
The Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging, Inc. plans to help the people that help others with two workshops during the month of November. The agency will present the "Caring for the Caregiver Informational Workshop" in honor of National Family Caregiver Month.
Marilyn passed on tips to protect yourself or your caregiver during her visit to 49's Good Morning Kansas.
- Caregivers should have regular health check-ups.
- Caregivers should pursue their own interests.
- Seek Support when needed.
- Look for in-home or community services to lift the load.
Good caregivers take time for themselves, Thomas said.
If a caregiver feels frustrated or angry, they should follow these simple steps, Marilyn said.
- Walk away
- Talk to someone
- Write in a journal
- Call a support hotline. 1-800-798-1366.
The workshop will take place on two separate days at the Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ PAW, 2420 SE Belleview Ave. The workshop will be on Nov. 17 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and the workshop will also take place on Nov. 30 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Some of events that will take place at the workshop are: a discussion of Medicare Part D, ways to protect yourself against health care fraud and information about Alzheimer's disease.
For more information about the events offered on both days. Look at the event schedule for Nov.17 and Nov. 30.
