Landlords Association offers to help clean up house from hell

VIDEO:

A group of landlords offer a helping hand to the owner of what neighbors are calling a long-time house from hell.

"A refrigerator is sometimes a death trap to small children. That needs to be addressed fast."

Darrel Eklund and Dan Kingman spot a serious code violation at 615 Southwest Tyler.

Codes inspector Sandra Cline agrees. She spoke with the homeowner about removing the fridge less than twenty four hours ago.

"The refrigerator needs to be gone today," Cline said. "But when the homeowner didn't remove it, the city did. We were there and watched as they loaded it into a truck and hauled it away."

One violation appears to be junk and trash in the yard.

Darrel Eklund and Dan Kingman are members of the Shawnee County Landlords Association and have volunteered to help clean up the property.

"We've heard many good things about the gentleman that lives here. He is elderly, we believe low income," Eklund said.

But Kingman is disappointed that the property owner has not been forced to clean up the property sooner.

This picture was taken two years ago. And neighbors pointed out the house during a codes tour of Old Town.

"I think it's unfortunate that something that is in this condition has been allowed to be in this condition for up to ten years," Kingman said.

Neighbors say the owner has made improvements to the roof. But more needs to be done.

A car in the back is filled to the top. Another violation, and the owner has to remove it.

If he doesn"t do it within that ten days, and he doesn't call and ask me for an extension, then my process would be to get a search warrant and have a judge sign it then I have the authority to tow that vehicle," Cline said.

The owner has not responded to the Shawnee County Landlords offer for help.

We'll let you know if that happens.
