History of the Hollywood scream

The scream is pure Hollywood. Fear. Terror. Sudden death.

You know that soldier getting crushed in the old horror movie Them, it sounds an awful lot like Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story, and just like this scream in Batman Returns.

That is what's known as The Wilhelm Scream.

"The scream just got to be an inside joke. It's so over the top and so funny," said sound editor Richard Anderson.

One sound editor made it his signature in every Star Wars movie and every one of the Indiana Jones series.

The Wilhelm Scream is named after a cowboy shot with an arrow in the 1953 Western The Charge at Feather River.

But the scream was originally recorded for the 1951 film Distant Drums in which a cowboy is bitten by an alligator.
