"I like the people. I like working with music and the ads and stuff like that," Christian Wendland said.
For two afternoons a week, Christian works at Cumulus Broadcasting in Topeka.
"I barter ads, which is taking two 30 second ads and putting them into one 60 second cart. Constructing the local advertising, putting it together, doing voice overs, effects," Christian said.
Christian is able to pursue his passion for radio with the help of Heartland Works. Heartland Works, in part, helps students with disabilities explore career options by partnering them with a local business and mentor.
Christian said he didn't want to talk about his disability, but to focus on his ability, his strengths.
"Music is obviously one of my strengths, and having an ear for music and also the technology side of it as far as the computers and the sound boards and all that goes," he said.
Christian's mentor is Production Director Billy Thompson.
"He definitely makes it a lot more fun around here on the days that he's here. He's very energetic, very enthusiastic, and he's willing to help everywhere. He wants to do this, wherever it takes him," Billy said.
National Mentoring Day
- When: Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Where: Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, 1515 SW 10th Ave., Topeka
- Cost: Free
- Age limit: All ages
Billy says a person's ability is what counts.
"I think everybody should be given a chance to pursue whatever goal they want to. I don't think a disability or anything should limit somebody," he said.
And to businesses who may be a little hesitant about hiring those with disabilities, Billy says give it a chance.
"This is probably been one of the best experiences around here. It also gives you a chance to really mold somebody for, if not with your business, obviously for another business," Billy said.
