Haunting. Creepy. Crawly. That describes the Halloween spirit, and the Topeka Zoo is getting into it.
Community members can get a glimpse and even touch and hold some of the creatures at the zoo this weekend. Boo at the Zoo kicks off at 11 a.m. Costumes are encouraged.
Lucille, for example, is an African ball python that will be slithering around at the event Saturday. Lucille is not poisonous, so don't worry if you cross her path at Boo at the Zoo.
The African ball python will get about 4 feet long. They are constrictors; so, they squeeze their prey.
African emperor scorpion, which people can also see at Boo at the Zoo, can immobilize its prey with its stinger. This particular species is not deadly, but some scorpions are, says Too Director Mike Coker. Some species of scorpions have four eyes (creepy), but they mostly find their way around using their sense of touch. Click the photo below to learn more about the scorpion.
Some scorpions are deadly. This one isn't, but it's stinger does hurt. That's why attendees of Boo at the Zoo will only be able to look at it. You can get a closer look at it now in a video explanation of the scorpion. Watch video.
