Topeka's Del Monte facility is expanding, bringing 80 new jobs to the area.
The corporation plans to build a distribution center near its existing pet food plant at North West Brickyard Road. The new 427,000 square foot addition will be built behind the warehouse.
The announcement was made at the Topeka Chamber of Commerce today.
The plant produces about a dozen different pet products.
Del Monte and the Chamber both say the new addition will give an opportunity for growth.
"Right now without the distribution center, we have no space to put finished goods. This will give us an opportunity to bid more projects and for the company to invest more money in new processes," said Del Monte Plant Manager Chris Koerber.
Del Monte still needs to go through some final steps before construction begins, but the company is looking forward to groundbreaking in the spring of 2008.
The Topeka facility manufactures and distributes more than a dozen pet products including Meow Mix® and 9Lives® cat foods, Meaty Bone® and Snausages® dog snacks, Nature’s Recipe® dog food, and Pounce® cat treats.
Del Monte has been owner of the Topeka plant since 2002.
