Lawrence A Kansas native who was once called the father of African art is being honored.
Aaron Douglas, a native of Topeka, was the first black artist to portray racial themes in modernist art.
He was virtually unknown in the Midwest, but now the Spencer Museum of Art at KU has an exhibit called "Aaron Douglas: African American Modernist."
The exhibit runs through December 2.
