It's called the walking club. But, these Atlanta area elementary students take off running and do not slow down until 30 minutes later.
"I like to walk and run with my friends. You can talk to your friends and laugh and stuff," student Gabriel Newton said.
Pediatrician and parent Dr. Jennifer Shu says that regular exercise is important for a child's growth and development.
"We know that almost one in five children are overweight; and, a big part of that problem is they are not getting enough exercise. Having something like walking club on a regular basis can keep kids moving," Shu said.
Assistant P.E. Instructor Katie Bashor runs the afterschool club and says some of the kids cover about two and half miles each day.
"I've seen a definite increase in their fitness," Bashor said.
Second grader Avery Pope is one of those who has benefited.
"Ever since I started this I've been losing a lot of pounds," Pope said.
