New law sets up program for returning soldiers

The state is starting a new scholarship program for soldiers who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan.
Gov. Kathleen Sebelius signed a bill Tuesday to set up the program, effective July 1. Legislators already have set aside $500,000 for the scholarships.
Soldiers can obtain the scholarships if they attend a community college or one of four state-supervised universities with ROTC programs. Those are the University of Kansas, Kansas State University, Pittsburg State University and Washburn University of Topeka.
The amount the students receive will be set by the state Board of Regents.
Also, soldiers will be eligible if they entered the military after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

Good for you Gov. Sebelius! And thanks to the Kansas Legislature for enacting this important legislation that might serve as a role model for a post 9/11 national G.I. Bill for our veterans.
It is about time we started taking better care of those that have served to protect our freedoms and our future.
