Crews get dirty for Oprah's Big Give: Topeka

The dust and the splinters fly as volunteers from Kern's Construction rip out cabinets and the wall in what used to be Karen Barezinsky's small kitchen.

"It's a dirty job right now tearing all this plaster off," says owner Keith Kerns.

These guys are clearing the way for what will soon be a brand new kitchen provided by more volunteers from the Topeka Professional Remodelers Council.

Kerns says, "We felt like it was going to a good cause and it gives us a chance to show how much we appreciate being able to do business in the Topeka and surrounding area."

And the work continues on the outside of Bobbie Fowler's home as Applehanz Roofing and Guttering scrape off layers and layers of old shingles. It's to make way for the new plywood and new shingles that will protect Bobbie's childhood home for the next 25 years.

Juan Sanchez explains what needs to be done at Big Give recipient Raymond Beard's home.

"Need to put in the cabinets and counter tops and trim the windows and trim the doors," he explains.

It's a far cry from the old cabinetry and old flooring that sat in Beard's kitchen for decades. He also has a brand new water heater and crews are sealing and replacing the windows upstairs.

Beard says, "It already looks different, like somebody else's house instead of mine. Yeah, I like it."

There's a busy week ahead for Oprah's Big Give Volunteers. All week long we'll show you the progress we're making.
