Reading, writing and rap a new beat in education

One area school encouraged its students to listen to rap music today.
An educational rapper and record producer stopped by the Kickapoo Nation School, encouraging a hip-hop curriculum.
The kids tried out a few new dance moves and learned about beats and lyrics.
The superintendent says it's important to try new ways to reach kids at this school, because more than half of them have special needs.
"Anything that is positive, that is something that turns the kids on, gets them excited about coming to school, we're going to utilize because we have research data that shows that the kids who participate in this type of rhyming, which is poetry, will do better in school," school superintendent Don Barta said.
Kids and teachers got free CD's from today's hip-hop workshops.
They continue tomorrow.
