Zoo animals chill out
As the temperature rises, Topeka Zoo employees aren't just offering relief from the heat to the animals
Today's heat created a concern for animals at the Topeka Zoo.
However, the zoo's got a few tricks to keep animals cool.
Every animal at the zoo has different temperature parameters.
The zoo monitors those, and if they get too high, there are ways to get animal temperatures back down.
The animals have access to shade, and some even have access to temperature-controlled areas.
The zoo also uses sprinklers on hot days and gives the animals ice cubes.
The Topeka Zoo has advice for zoo-goers on hot days.
"We encourage folks, maybe on a hot day, come out a little earlier in the day. The animals will probably be a little more active, you'll probably feel a little more active in the morning, then as it gets a little warmer, the animal's going to retreat back into shaded areas and things like that," Topeka Zoo Director Mike Coker said.
You can find zoo hours and ticket pricing on its Web site, Topeka.org/zoo.
