49 Sports Challenge: Dave is a pinhead
5:15 p.m. Tuesday, August 5, 2008
Trevor Artzer is a 22-year-old bowler who was brought into the sport at a very young age by a close family member.
"At about five or six, my grandma got me into it and been doing it ever since," Trevor said. "She bowled, she was also managing at Gage North and then she got me hooked on it because I would go out there during the summer and just bowl out there."
Trevor has a 200 average and he rolls the rock down the alley because of the thrill of competition.
"You can bowl up against anyone and you never know if you are going to get beat or not and I just like the competition," he said.
Of course his goal is simple, to be one of the area's best.
"My goal is to try to be a top ten bowler, which hasn't happen yet, but I would really like it to happen sometime," Trevor said.
His girlfriend Tiffany knows that if Trevor wants to be the best, some days bowling has to come first.
"No, I work around bowling so I don't have any reason to get mad at him," Tiffany Snyder said.
Trevor wants people to know that you don't have to be the strongest or fastest to be a great bowler.
"You don't really need any athletic ability to bowl. It just comes natural to people. Pretty much you just got to practice," he said.
That's a good sign for me. You don't have to be an athlete, but do I stand a chance against Trevor?
"Slim to none," Trevor said.
Why is that?
"Because I am over a 200 average bowler."
So a novice like me stands no chance.
"Pretty much."
I guess that can only mean one thing: it's challenge time.
"Trevor, what's my sports challenge today?"
"Three games of bowling with a series."
So I strapped on my bowling shoes, selected my weapon of choice and I was off to a hot start, picking up a spare in the first frame.
On the other hand, Trevor struggled out of the gate. He said the lane conditions today didn't fit his game so I capitalized, finishing the first game with a strike and took game one 130-88.
Game two, Trevor came back with vengeance, picking up a strike and I seemed to leave one pin standing the entire game. Trevor won game two, 124-93.
Game three was not my best game, but I tried to hold it together. Trevor, on the other hand, kept pouring it on. When everything was all said and done, game three goes to Trevor 109-107. But this is a series and yours truly takes it by nose, 330-321.
I haven't won many of these this year. It's only my second victory. Did you think I had any chance coming into this?
"I didn't. I ate my own words on that one."
So how were my bowling skills?
"Not bad. We could use you on our team."
