Sirloin cutlets and grilled corn on the cob for breakfast sounds crazy, but that's just what some guests to this weekend's Farmers Market in Emporia will be eating, for free.

That's thanks to sponsors of the Grillin' at the Market event, which brings the BBQ Queens from the Greater Kansas City area to town.

BBQ queens, Karen Adler and Judith Fertig, are grilling experts and authors of several cookbooks. They will be sharing their knowledge and barbecue with the public from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 9.

They will use locally grown meat, cheese, fruits and vegetables.

Rachael LeClear, with the Flint Hills Technical College, said the idea to bring barbecue education to the community started at the college.

"But, the event has grown so much that we decided to make it free for the whole community," LeClear said.

This is the first time the event has been featured at the Farmers Market.

The market in its 26th year and having its best year ever, Tracey Graham, with the market, said.

"People are appreciating the local more and more," she said.

Both Graham and LeClear say local produce is better tasting and more nutritious.
