AVID program signs on more college hopefuls

26 Topeka High School students signed contracts tonight to pledge that they want to go to college.
It's all part of a new program in Topeka Public Schools called Advancement Via Individual Determination, or AVID, for short.
The program pairs students in middle school, high school and college to try and get more students to go to college.
Students take advanced courses and are mentored throughout the program.
AVID targets kids who are low-income and first generation college students to close the achievement gap.
"They have the intelligence to do well in college, they just don't know how to get there," AVID district director Carolyn Altman said. "So AVID is a program that's going to give them those skills to give them the opportunity to go to college when they get done with high school."
Friday on 49 News at 10, find out why one student decided to join the AVID program, and what her mom says is the best part.
