The MS 150, a two day cycling event, is about a month away, but organizers say they need individuals now.
The event benefits people affected by multiple sclerosis, and the local chapter of the MS Society is expecting about 300 riders for its Sept. 20 and 21 event.
Right now, organizers are looking for rest stop captains, food service workers and other volunteers to help the cyclists, some of whom will be riding 150 miles.
Bike MS: Eastern Kansas
- When: Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008, time TBA
- Where: Various locations, Oskaloosa, KS
- Cost: Not available
- Age limit: Not available
The local chapter serves 40 counties. Proceeds from the race go to pay for self-help groups, educational programs and research for a cure. More than 78 percent of the money is invested locally or into national research, said Jenny Oxandale with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Three route options are available on Saturday, a 60-mile, an 88-mile and a 100-mile route. Sunday riders can take a 45-mile or 65-mile route. Riders can choose to ride one day or two.
"It's a great ride for a cause. We have lots of entertainment," Oxandale said.
Riders will be treated to a meal at Johnny Carino's Saturday night, where they will celebrate two riders who have been participating for 20 years and listen to speakers who are currently coping with MS. The Jerry Daniels Band will cap off the night with a performance.
"So we have everything for the family, the riders, participants and people with MS to come out," Oxandale said. "So, it's a great event."
